Hi, all, and happy Tuesday!

Also, happy ELECTION DAY! We’ve got hugely important races coming to a close today in Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York City, California, Georgia, Maine, Texas, Connecticut, Colorado, and so many other places. Let’s make this a rout!

I’m going to make this an abbreviated email, as I’m going to go hop on the phones for the rest of the day and I’m hoping that you, too, are engaged in whatever GOTV activities you can be. Things are looking great, but we can take nothing for granted, and if some of the bigger ticket races seem assured, let’s go out and make sure that equally important downballot races get the attention they need and deserve. Remember, Shelley Simonds lost her Virginia statehouse election in 2017 by a single vote. Had she won then, instead of two years later when she ran again, Medicaid would have been expanded in Virginia two years earlier.

Since then the stakes have only gotten higher. Lives are literally on the line. Healthcare is, too. Trump announced this morning that he will defy court orders and refuse to fund SNAP until, basically, Democrats allow Republicans to rip away people’s healthcare. Everything encapsulated by the preceding sentence is at stake in these elections.

So let’s work hard to turn out the vote today. Tell your friends and family to get out and vote. Give them the national voter hotline number: 866-OUR-VOTE, or the webiste: 866ourvote.org. Tell them about Shelley Simonds. Help them understand how, especially in vital downballot races, their vote could be the one determining whether or not important books get banned, or a child gets free lunch, or Medicaid gets funding from the state, or their utility bill goes up or down, or whether we are able to rein Trump in next year.

Tell them their vote is their voice. Because it’s true.

Let’s get out there and make democracy happen, folks. Sending love.

Hi, I’m a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.

I’m calling because I understand that Trump is now threatening to withhold SNAP payments despite a court order forcing him to release them. This is despicable and unacceptable. The Trump administration must abide by court orders just like the rest of us. Trump is acting like a dictator and we won’t have it. Tell the USDA to fully fund SNAP now, please.

I also want Congress to pass a permanent extension of the ACA premium tax credits. Nothing less will do. Republicans found trillions of dollars for tax cuts for rich people. They can find the money to fund our healthcare. Thanks.

Let’s call or write to the Dodgers and ask them for God’s sake not to accept an invitation to visit the White House this time.

866-DODGERS (Ext. 9) —the administration offices—or email fanfeedback@ladodgers.com.

I said simply:

To Whom It May Concern at the Dodgers,

I’m writing as a long time Los Angeles resident and big fan to ask you to please not accept an invitation to the White House to celebrate the Dodgers’ World Series win. It would be such a slap in the face to LA residents after the year we’ve had. This administration has absolutely terrorized this country and our city in particular. If the Dodgers ignore all of that and attend anyway they are not only stabbing their fans in the back, figuratively speaking, but showing support for ICE’s brutal tactics. You’ll also be risking a boycott the likes of which you’ve never seen.

Please don’t do it.

Thanks.

But you don’t need to be in LA to write. This concerns us all.

Yesterday’s Reuters report on the firing of Joe Allen, the acting Inspector General of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), marks yet another chilling milestone in the Trump administration’s campaign to dismantle independent oversight and weaponize federal power against political opponents.

Allen, a 40-year Justice Department veteran, was reportedly dismissed after attempting to deliver constitutionally required information to prosecutors and preparing to notify Congress that the FHFA was refusing to cooperate with his investigations. His removal came directly from the White House—just as FHFA Director Bill Pulte, a vocal Trump ally, has been using his position to pursue criminal referrals targeting political figures who have opposed or prosecuted the president, including New York Attorney General Letitia James, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, and Senator Adam Schiff.
