She noted that the World Cup will boost tourism and that Mexico will once again host its inauguration.
Finance Ministry Adjusts Tax Rules to Ensure the 2026 World Cup
The Ministry of Finance is reviewing, together with FIFA, the fiscal commitments signed during the Peña Nieto administration to facilitate the organization of the 2026 World Cup. Mexico will uphold those agreements and issue an enabling regulation to apply customs and tax benefits only to those directly participating in the event. The Tax Administration Service (SAT) will define the specific rules and requirements. The measures will allow the temporary import of materials, streamline customs procedures, and ensure the tournament proceeds without legal obstacles, all in strict accordance with Mexican law.
Mexico Makes History: Full Coordination with FIFA on the Road to 2026
Jurgen Mainka, Executive Director of FIFA Mexico, thanked the Mexican government for its leadership and the inter-ministerial coordination that has ensured steady progress heading to the 2026 World Cup. He emphasized that Mexico was the first country to appoint an official responsible for the organization of the event and that the project is possible thanks to joint work with local committees and the private sector, which owns the host stadiums.
More than 800,000 visitors are expected, and in addition to three official Fan Fests, the tournament will reach an estimated global audience of 6 billion viewers.
Mexico Opens the 2026 World Cup: a Historic Moment to Show the World Who We Are
President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that the 2026 World Cup will be a national celebration and an opportunity to show the world the historic moment Mexico is experiencing. The country will host 13 matches — including the opening game on June 11 in Mexico City — and is expecting 5.5 million visitors. The capital will do its part with two airports, the Felipe Angeles International Aiport (AIFA)–Buenavista train line, which will be ready for the event, while the Department of Tourism is preparing routes and activities at key locations such as Campo Marte, the Zócalo, and Parque Fundidora.
On the social front, the Mundialito Social 2026 will be launched, involving the construction of soccer fields and local tournaments throughout the country. Next Monday, the governors of Jalisco and Nuevo León, along with Mexico City’s head of government, will attend the Morning Presidential Press Conference to present updates and projects financed by the federal government.
A Ticket for Hope: Sheinbaum Gives up her Seat for World Cup Inauguration
President Sheinbaum said that although she is excited about the World Cup’s opening ceremony, she has decided to give her ticket to a young girl who would otherwise not have the chance to attend. She explained that the mechanism for selecting the recipient is still being defined and reiterated that Mexico will welcome visitors and world leaders with open arms.
Mexico Aims to Host the 2031 Women’s World Cup
The Mexican Soccer Confederation, together with the United States and Costa Rica, has submitted a bid to host the 2031 Women’s World Cup. Jurgen Mainka announced that the process is already underway and that the formal proposal will be delivered in April. Mexico is positioning itself as a strong candidate to host one of the most important women’s soccer events in the world.
