Mexico City. “It’s not going to happen,” declared President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo in response to statements by her US counterpart, Donald Trump, who yesterday asserted that he could launch attacks against Mexico to prevent drugs from entering US territory.

During Tuesday’s morning press conference, when asked about the tycoon’s remarks, the Mexican President stressed that her administration will not request the intervention or support of US troops in the fight against organized crime.

The President stated that after Trump’s statements “there was a clarification (…) Then they released a statement that only if we asked them to, would they intervene.”

“We are not going to ask for it; we don’t want intervention from any foreign government. There is collaboration, there is coordination, but there is neither subordination nor can we allow intervention. The last time the United States came to Mexico with an intervention, it took half of the territory,” she emphasized.

She insisted: “It’s not that we don’t want support, but not with foreign troops.”

Yesterday at the White House, the US president stated that he could launch attacks against Mexico to prevent drugs from entering the United States. “Would I launch attacks on Mexico to stop drug trafficking? I have no problem with that! We will do whatever is necessary to stop it,” he said.

In this regard, the Mexican President stressed that in the various calls she has had with Trump she has made it clear that this type of support is not required.

“We have mentioned this many times. In the conversations I have had with President Trump, he has said on several occasions: ‘We offer you any US military intervention in Mexico you need to combat criminal groups.’ And I have told him on every occasion that we can collaborate, that we can participate in the information, but that we do not accept intervention by a foreign government.”

Sheinbaum Pardo assured that the same thing has been made known to the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

“They have understood. The understanding (on security matters between both countries, signed during Rubio’s recent visit to Mexico) is one of collaboration and coordination, and the first points clearly demonstrate respect for sovereignty and our territoriality,” the President noted.
