Mexico City. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reported that her Honduran counterpart, Xiomara Castro, expressed her concern about possible foreign interference in the elections next Sunday in that country.
“She was very keen to make us understand that it is crucial to respect the will of the Honduran people, that there be no interference or intervention from anyone, and that the people of Honduras be the ones to decide,” Sheinbaum said from the National Palace. She demanded that the popular will be respected.
Castro “came to share his concern that this might not be the case, and I hope that it will be, that the will of all peoples will always be respected.” She said that the Honduran president “has about four months left in her term and wants to finish” maintaining Honduras’s relationship with Mexico.
“It’s a good government. She reduced extreme poverty and poverty with programs similar to ours, also increasing the minimum wage, and with many social infrastructure projects. So, from my point of view, it has been a good government.”
And we, she stressed, “always respect all the peoples and governments of Latin America, particularly a progressive government like the one that governs Honduras today.”
She thanked Xiomara Castro for her visit to Mexico. “Among other things, she came to express her gratitude for the support Mexico has given her during her administration: there is the Sembrando Vida program, and a second phase of Jóvenes Construyendo el Futuro is coming, which was conceived as a cooperation initiative for development.”
“The best way to prevent migration is by investing in and supporting people in their places of origin,” she reiterated.
