Hi, all, and happy Tuesday.

I wanted to share an update with you about our fight to extend the ACA premium tax credits. The info below is current as of yesterday—I got it from the folks at Protect Our Care.

You’ll remember that as part of the deal to end the shutdown Senate Democrats secured a vote around extending the ACA tax credit subsidies; last week the White House was set to release a plan that actually would’ve done this for the next two years. When Republicans on the Hill heard about it, however, they mobilized and got Trump to backtrack. This is important, as it shows there is a huge amount of GOP opposition to any extension of these life-saving credits.

Republicans, in fact, currently have no plan to extend the tax credits before the end of the month. This means that any extension seems highly unlikely. Millions of Americans will be horribly hurt by this—I know many of you are among them. I hope to God something changes—we are going to advocate our hardest to make something change. But it’s not looking great.

The vote in the Senate is likely sometime next week. There will be two proposals voted on—one Democratic and one Republican. We’re not sure what either proposal will look like yet. But no one seems to think either will secure a veto-proof majority.

Meanwhile, in the House, Hakeem Jeffries is pushing a discharge petition that would extend the credits for three years. He’s got lots of signatures on it—I think every Democrats’ but Rep. Gluesenkamp Perez’s—but he needs a few Republicans to sign on, too. He’s pushing for that, and we’re going to help him. Even if the petition is successful, however, it’s again extremely unclear whether such a bill would have any path forward in the Senate.

All of this is to say that there’s a lot of uncertainty and many balls in the air, but it’s not looking great for these tax credits. I, for one, find myself flabbergasted at not just the cruelty of the Republicans’ approach, but the stupidity of it. Without these credits—and with the Medicaid cuts starting to kick in—we’re going to see an absolute cataclysm in healthcare next year. Republicans will unequivocally and unambiguously own it. They either can’t see that or they don’t care. Either is disqualifying.

Speaking of disqualifying, we should also talk about Pete Hegseth. I highly recommend Jay Kuo’s great post about why, to use his words, “any way you slice this bread, Hegseth is toast.” The TLDR, in case you don’t feel like reading, is that Hegseth either committed a war crime by ordering a “double tap” on a so-called “Venezuelan drug boat” or, if we’re not actually at war, he committed murder. There is simply no legal way out of the hot water he’s in. He ruthlessly ordered the killing of two helpless men floating in burning wreckage. It was the definition of giving “no quarter.” Sooner or later he’s going to go down for it.

In the meantime we’re going to call for his impeachment. The Trump administration is hoping this will blow over; it’s up to us to make sure it doesn’t.

Finally, today is election day in Tennessee’s 7th district. Aftyn Behn has run one hell of a race, and seeing the entire country rally to her support has been a true joy. If she wins it will not only be monumental, by the way, but she’ll be the first CWCW subscriber to go to Congress! I have all the fingers crossed.

But even if Aftyn loses, any major overperformance will be seen as devastating for the GOP. So please, if you can, sign up for a final phonebank today. I did it yesterday—it was a blast! The voters you nudge to get to the polls could be the ones that put Aftyn over the edge to victory, or the ones who make hers a 3 point loss instead of a 4 point one. Either way every voter really matters in this election. More info on phonebanking below.

OK, all. As always I’m so proud to be in this fight with you. You are changing history for the better.

Let’s go do it one more time!

Call Your Senators (find yours here) 📲

Hi, I’m a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.

First, I’m calling to say that Secretary Hegseth needs to be impeached and removed from office. It’s absolutely unacceptable to have a Secretary of Defense who rejects the Geneva Conventions and orders war crimes. Will the Senator immediately call for impeachment proceedings to begin?

Second, I know there is going to be a vote soon on the ACA premium tax credits and I want the Senator to know that I want them extended. The end of these subsidies would spell financial and physical disaster for millions of Americans. It could also collapse our healthcare system. Don’t let it happen. Thanks.

Call Your House Rep (find yours here) 📲

First, I’m calling to say that Secretary Hegseth needs to be impeached and removed from office. It’s absolutely unacceptable to have a Secretary of Defense who rejects the Geneva Conventions and orders war crimes. Will the Congressmember immediately introduce articles of impeachment?

Second, I know Rep. Jeffries has introduced a discharge petition to force a vote in the House on a bill to extend the ACA premium tax credits by three years. I expect the Congressmember to sign on to it. The end of these subsidies would spell financial and physical disaster for millions of Americans. It could also collapse our healthcare system. Extra Credit ✅

Hakeem Jeffries came out yesterday and said that Democrats wouldn’t pursue impeachment of Pete Hegseth. Let’s call him.

House Minority Leader Jeffries ‭(718) 373-0033‬ or ‭(718) 237-2211‬ or ‭(202) 225-5936‬

We can say something like:

My name is _____ and I’m a Democratic voter from [city, state.] I’m calling Rep. Jeffries in his capacity as House Minority Leader to ask why on earth he would announce that Democrats won’t pursue impeachment against Pete Hegseth? The Secretary is a war criminal or he’s a murderer. Either way he cannot remain in his position. For Democratic leadership to cave on this without a peep is infuriating, disheartening, and exasperating. We want leaders who refuse to surrender. This the opposite of that. It’s weakness and cowardice. Please ask the Leader to start fighting or step aside. Thanks.

Please join All In for NC and seven other groups to fund the registration of 250,000 Black, Latine and young voters in North Carolina. A collaboration of eight NC groups that have proven capacity are working together on this; in 2024, they registered 240,000 voters.

Please give here: Register 250,000 voters in North Carolina.

While white voters in NC are 83% registered, Black voters are only 63% registered. It’s critical that they have funds now so that they can build effective teams in the cool weather.

They are having a fundraising drive to raise $200,0000, not a specific event. All contributions are tax-deductible; email mafornc@gmail.com for more information.

All In for NC is an all-volunteer group that supports grassroots groups in North Carolina with funds, phone calling and canvassing. You can sign up for their newsletter here: https://swingbluealliance.org/northcarolina/.
