At this point, we’re all painfully aware of the fact that Donald Trump needs to make everything about him. So it’s no surprise that the president felt compelled to make an attention-grabbing comment on the apparent murder of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
But Trump’s Monday morning Truth Social post on the Reiners’ passing went far beyond his usual tactlessness. Trump began by describing Rob Reiner as “tortured and struggling,” then he seemed to blame the acclaimed director for his own death:

To be clear, at this point there is no reason to think the Reiners’ murder had anything to do with politics. Shortly after Trump’s post went up, the L.A. Times reported that Reiner’s son Nick was booked into the Los Angeles County jail on suspicion of murder. Nick Reiner has been open about his longtime struggle with substance abuse, and authorities have not said anything about a possible motive.
