Minister of the Interior, Justice, and Peace Diosdado Cabello, reported that “100 Venezuelans were killed” in the US attack on Venezuela. The military operation that captured Maduro and his wife involved 150 ships deployed throughout Venezuelan territory, destroying the South American country’s anti-aircraft system and bombing military and civilian infrastructure.
According to US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, about 200 US soldiers participated in the military operation in Caracas, where Maduro and Flores were apparently captured.
Cabello reported that most of those killed were young people, including 32 Cubans who were carrying out security activities previously agreed upon with the Caracas government.
“So far, and I say so far, there are 100 dead and a similar number of wounded. The attack against our country is terrible … [Some of those who died are] people who had nothing to do with the conflict: civilians, women who were in their homes [and who] were hit by the impact of the powerful bombs that were dropped,” said Cabello.
Due to the hundred deaths counted so far, the country’s acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, declared seven days of national mourning. The Venezuelan government claims that the soldiers were killed without yielding to US military power, which was applied “disproportionately in firepower, technology, and surgical precision,” according to Telesur.
In this regard, Cabello, who has shown his unconditional support for Rodríguez, said about the deaths: “Comrades of the Armed Forces, Cuban brothers who were here in Venezuela, police personnel, comrades who were asleep in their homes and suddenly shrapnel hit them, and they were killed.” On January 6, the remains of 24 soldiers from the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) were mourned and honored by Venezuelan authorities.
In addition, Cabello said that the objective of the attacks is different from a supposed defense of democracy: “The problem is not democracy, the problem is the resources available to the nation … All presidents who have protected natural resources have suffered a coup d’état.”
In this regard, the minister of the interior said that his government is taking all actions within its power to recover Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores (who are “prisoners of war”, according to Cabello), as soon as possible, after what he called a violation of international law.
For his part, Attorney General Tarek William Saab said that investigations are underway to determine the exact number of dead, wounded, and the material damage following the offensive.
Wounded US soldiers
Meanwhile, several international media outlets reported that at least seven US soldiers were wounded following the military operation against Venezuela, called “Absolute Resolve”. Apparently, two of the seven soldiers are still recovering. One of them suffered several bullet wounds to his legs.
Thus, claims that there was no combat between Venezuelan forces and the US Army during the 140 minutes that the US military operation lasted are beginning to prove false.
