Good morning.
This is all part of a major effort by China’s national and provincial governments, to develop the world’s largest low-altitude economy.
Most of us think here of flying taxis and drone delivery service in big cities, which means that our lifestyles, which are already very convenient if we’re honest, will get a little bit more so. More importantly though, this industry will transform logistics and supply chains for remote areas, and for populations with no service at all.
This is a drone cargo plane, designed for logistics and disaster response. It is the first unmanned aircraft for high-altitude, it can operate using very short runways, and is adaptable to either landing full of cargo, or dropping it by parachute to the ground. The capacity is one ton, with a range of over a thousand miles, with AI systems for loading and unloading in under five minutes.
It’s built for operations in remote areas, and urgent cargo deliveries, such as with search and rescue or disaster relief. Imagine a place without airports, so no runways. With this thing, the Tianma-1000, any road that is just a few hundred meters long is long enough. Supplies, fuel, food, people, products—can be flown in and out again, and so this opens up vast areas of the world that have people, and roads, but not an airport.
In the same week, another drone validation test. This model is called the Taurus, and has a two-ton payload, with an even longer range. Sichuan and Xizang—Tibet—are high-altitude, and get a lot of challenging weather and winds. The Taurus was designed with those kinds of places in mind, and it too only needs a short runway to get into the air and back down again.
Here again, with these aircraft, logistics to the most extreme environments and most remote areas become possible. Transportation of agricultural products and machinery, construction materials, medical supplies and disaster response: everything under two tons can be put onto these drone aircraft, and either lifted or air-dropped wherever there is a need, or a buyer.
As these flights become more common, and routine, they are transformative to the economies of everywhere they go. So the race is on, to build the equipment and technologies for this industry. By last year, the low-altitude economy in China was already over a thousand companies generating $215 billion, and will more than double in the next decade.
