How did you get involved with anti-war activism and World BEYOND War (WBW)?

I found WBW in 2022. I was previously involved in the South African anti-apartheid movement, serving on the Mandela Welcoming Committee that first brought him to Japan after his release from prison. I am now involved in the movement for Palestinian liberation, where my roles include co-founding BDS Japan and Kairos Palestine Japan. I was looking for a way to integrate my work on these single issues intersectionally. WBW showed me a powerful way.

What kinds of WBW activities do you work on?

My first action with WBW was to join the global protest against the manufacture of parts for fighter jets here in Japan for Lockheed Martin in 2022. Since then, I have mainly been involved in anti-nuke activities, such as attending the World Conference against A and H Bombs in Hiroshima, and anti-base activities. In October 2025, we held an open house in Osaka to introduce the #CloseBases campaign. I have also had the pleasure of hosting WBW VP Liz Remmerswaal for a showing of the film Tau Te Mauri Breath Of Peace, about the anti-nuke movement in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

What’s your top recommendation for someone who wants to get involved with anti-war activism and WBW?

I would say first, familiarize yourself with the abundant resources on the WBW website, especially the Mapping Militarism section, and read the book A Global Security System. Attend some webinars or watch some recordings, meet some local volunteers, and open your heart to the voices that speak to you.

What keeps you inspired to advocate for change?

The people around the world who I see making real changes, even under the most adverse circumstances. Stopping plans to build new bases that threaten to destabilize their communities. Protecting their villages nonviolently from violent illegal settlers. Art and music that have the power to break down the hard walls that fearful people have built around their hearts. Be sure to check out the inspiring playlists in the Resources section of the WBW website.
