When I was in undergrad, we had a unit in BioChem in which we were to extract DNA. At that time, in that specific lab this was a relatively new process, and for reasons never really understood, “something wrong with the buffers”, we were never able to extract successfully. lol, now we can do stuff like this, waste water surveillance, and so much more.
