How did you get involved with anti-war activism and World BEYOND War (WBW)?

My interest in anti-war activism and peacebuilding comes from both my personal background and my academic and professional experiences. Growing up as a Somali, I have witnessed how conflict and instability can affect communities, limit access to education, and create long-term development challenges. These experiences shaped my passion for peacebuilding and international development at an early age.

I later pursued this interest academically by studying International Relations and Peace Studies at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan. During my studies, I became increasingly interested in nonviolent approaches to conflict resolution, sustainable development, and grassroots peacebuilding initiatives. I also volunteered with organizations supporting refugees and migrants, which further deepened my understanding of how conflict affects individuals and communities.

I became involved with World BEYOND War because I was inspired by its mission to promote nonviolent solutions and build a global movement for peace. I was particularly drawn to the organization’s focus on education, advocacy, and international collaboration. Through World BEYOND War, I have had the opportunity to engage in meaningful advocacy work, especially related to African peace initiatives and anti-war campaigns.

Working with World BEYOND War has also exposed me to inspiring advocacy efforts, such as campaigns promoting nonviolent conflict resolution, raising awareness about militarization, and supporting grassroots peacebuilding initiatives. Being part of this global network of peace advocates has strengthened my commitment to working toward a more peaceful and just world.

What kinds of WBW activities do you work on?

As an Organizing Intern with World BEYOND War, I support advocacy campaigns and event coordination, particularly related to Africa-focused peace initiatives. One of the key campaigns I am working on is the #NoBasesAfrica campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the impact of foreign military bases and promote peaceful alternatives that prioritize sustainable development and community well-being.

My role includes helping to promote webinars, coordinating outreach, supporting event planning, and assisting with campaign communications. I also help update the events calendar to share upcoming events with broader audiences to increase participation and engagement.

For example, I have supported the promotion of webinars focused on nonviolence, peace education, and grassroots activism. These events bring together participants from different countries to discuss practical ways to advocate for peace and strengthen global solidarity. Through these activities, I help ensure that information reaches a wider audience and that more people can participate in peacebuilding conversations.

What’s your top recommendation for someone who wants to get involved with anti-war activism and WBW?

My top recommendation for someone who wants to get involved with World BEYOND War is to start small but stay consistent. There are many ways to contribute, whether it’s attending webinars, sharing campaigns on social media, volunteering for events, or engaging in discussions about peacebuilding in your local community.

For example, in Japan, individuals can participate in educational events, join discussions on nonviolence, or support awareness campaigns. In Africa, people can help amplify local peace initiatives, support community dialogues, or work with youth groups focused on conflict prevention.

Even simple actions, like sharing information, attending events, or connecting with like-minded individuals, can make a meaningful difference. World BEYOND War provides a welcoming space for people from diverse backgrounds to contribute to a shared goal of building a more peaceful world.

What keeps you inspired to advocate for change?

What keeps me inspired is seeing people from different parts of the world come together to advocate for peace and justice. Working with individuals who are committed to nonviolence and sustainable change reminds me that collective action can make a real difference.

I am particularly inspired by grassroots activists and community leaders who work tirelessly to promote dialogue and understanding, even in challenging environments. Through World BEYOND War, I have seen how collaboration across countries and cultures can create meaningful impact.

I am also motivated by the belief that peacebuilding is closely connected to education and opportunity. When communities have access to education, dialogue, and resources, they are more empowered to build peaceful and resilient societies. Being part of a global movement working toward these goals gives me hope and encourages me to continue advocating for change.
