The federal government is reportedly taking aim at another one of President Donald Trump’s political enemies: Letitia James.

The New York Times reports that the Justice Department has issued two subpoenas to the state attorney general’s office in connection with an investigation into cases led by James. According to the outlet, the subpoenas are in relation to her office’s civil fraud case against Trump and his personal businesses as well as James’s suit against the National Rifle Association. Sources tell NBC News that the Justice Department’s newly launched inquiry is investigating whether James and her office violated the civil rights of any of the individuals pursued by her team. The investigation is said to be led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York.

In a statement, a spokesperson for James’s office denounced the action from the Justice Department. “Any weaponization of the justice system should disturb every American. We stand strongly behind our successful litigation against the Trump Organization and the National Rifle Association, and we will continue to stand up for New Yorkers’ rights,” it read.

It was in 2022 that James sued Trump and top executives of the Trump Organization, alleging that they knowingly inflated the value of Trump’s real-estate holdings and his net worth to banks and insurers in order to receive more favorable loan terms. Two years later, a federal judge would find Trump liable for fraud, ordering him to pay a seismic $355 million fine with interest. Trump’s legal team quickly moved to appeal the ruling, and the matter remains undecided. The fine is said to stand at more than a half a million dollars as of this year.

James sued the NRA in 2020, alleging years of fraud by its executives and seeking the group’s dissolution. Wayne LaPierre, the longtime leader of the gun-rights group, was found liable for financial mismanagement and was ordered to repay millions of dollars to the NRA. He was also banned from working for the organization for ten years.
