    Look up “Hell’s Angels” by Hunter Thompson. There’s a passage where he writes about the economics of being a hippie/biker/artist circa 1970.

    In those days, a biker could get a job as a Union stevedore and make enough money in six months to drop out and hit the road for two years. A part time waitress could support herself and a boyfriend.
