This article by Enrique Méndez and Fernando Camacho appeared in the August 20, 2025 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.

In the five investigation files of the Campeche Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, which requested the removal of Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas’s immunity, “there are elements” of crimes allegedly committed by officials of his administration, said Hugo Éric Flores Cervantes, president of the investigative section.

He explained that the four members of that jurisdictional body’s analysis of the case file is “very advanced” and “practically ready to issue a ruling” on the crimes of embezzlement and improper performance of public office attributed to the national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

Two weeks before the regular session begins, during which the case against Moreno will be heard, the legislator stated that for now he cannot provide details of the elements included in the file “so as not to get involved in a procedural matter.”

In an interview, Flores Cervantes was asked about Alito Moreno ‘s decision to discuss his case in the United States and international forums. “I wouldn’t do it, but he made that decision. As we expressed in the document (delivered on August 1): we will abide by the law; there is no political decision coming, it will be legal. We will abide by the current regulations, which are outdated, but they are the ones we have,” he stated.

Following the second request for his immunity from the Campeche Public Prosecutor’s Office, the PRI leader has stated that he is the target of political persecution. Yesterday, the president of the investigative section maintained that this statement is the result of Alito Moreno Cárdenas’s “imagination.”

The PRI member “took a political route that we, the members of the investigating panel, will not take; we will adhere to the provisions of the Constitution, the Law on the Responsibilities of Public Servants, and, of course, the case file. The message is very clear: there is no political persecution, and we will not lend ourselves to it.”

He confirmed that the PRI senator will be served notice of the case against him when the investigating section accepts the case, which will occur in September.

“There will be no legal action until the eligibility requirements are thoroughly reviewed. The entire file is under review. We will likely have a working meeting at the end of this month to discuss the issue. A session will then be convened to admit or reject the request for removal of immunity,” he explained.
