The Mexico City Government reported that, after learning the results of the public consultation on the construction of two Utopías , one in the Águilas-Japón Park, in Álvaro Obregón, and another in the Xochimilco Sports Complex, the latter was rejected by the population, so they will look for another place to carry it out.

Since the local government announced its intention to build Utopias in the aforementioned sports centers, residents have expressed their opposition, claiming that the intervention would damage natural areas and would be unnecessary for the parks.

Yesterday, September 14, the public consultation for the construction of Utopias was held , with the participation of 7,789 people.

“In the particular case of Xochimilco , with the support of the community, another space will be sought where this social project can be built. Utopias are spaces that aim to guarantee the right to sports, education, culture, recreation, and well-being free of charge, and more than one hundred are expected to be built during this administration,” the Mexico City Secretariat of Citizen Participation and Attention detailed in a statement.

In the Álvaro Obregón borough, 5,228 voters turned out, with 69.8 percent approving the project’s continuation in the district. In the Xochimilco borough, 2,651 people participated, with 77.3 percent voting to allow the sports complex to remain in its current operating condition.
