Heroines and Transformation
President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that in the Cry of Independence ceremony, heroines of the homeland were included as an act of justice and remembrance. She emphasized that Josefa Ortiz should be remembered as Téllez-Girón and not “de Domínguez, her married name, because “she belongs to no one.”
USMCA Consultations and Canadian PM Official Visit
The President clarified that the beginning of USMCA consultations is a legal and mandatory process for the three countries, focused on issues such as tariffs, with a 60-day extendable deadline. She also announced the official visit to Mexico of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, with a bilateral meeting agenda, joint press conference, and meeting with businesspeople.
Amparo Reform: Faster and More Effective Justice
President Sheinbaum explained that the reform to the Amparo Law guarantees this citizen right to file injunctions but shortens deadlines and limits the possibility of prolonging judicial processes even with final rulings. The goal is to speed up justice and prevent cases from taking decades to resolve.
Electoral Reform: Less Spending, More Efficiency
The President clarified that the reform does not seek to eliminate the National Electoral Institute (INE) nor subordinate it to the Executive Branch. The INE will maintain its autonomy and control of the voter registration records. The goal is to reduce election and party spending and review the system of proportional representation without eliminating minority representation.
Claudia to Zedillo: The People Chose Democracy
Sheinbaum responded to former president Ernesto Zedillo’s claim that “democracy in Mexico is over,” recalling that his government rescued bankers with the Foabroa rescue and left thousands of debtors on the street. She said the country is now different because the people chose the transformation, which has lifted more than 13 million Mexicans out of poverty.
She questioned how someone who, according to Francisco Labastida himself, made a pact with the United States for the PAN to take power in 2000, can speak about democracy. She added that the opposition is desperate because of popular support for the Fourth Transformation (4T) and President López Obrador, an honest leader who changed the country’s course, emphasizing that businessmen have seen their companies grow but must pay their taxes.
Bermúdez Case: Extradition and Zero Impunity
The President reported that the arrest of Hernán Bermúdez Requena, former Secretary of Security in Tabasco, resulted from the National Intelligence Center’s work and that his extradition from Paraguay is already in the works. She affirmed that the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) will thoroughly investigate how he was linked to crime and reiterated that there will be no impunity regardless of a suspect’s posts or political affiliations. Senator Adán Augusto López expressed his willingness to testify if necessary.
