Apart from the 40-hour work week, one of the pending initiatives in labour matters is the double bonus (or 30 days bonus), a proposal made by legislator Napoleón Gómez Urrutia in the previous legislative session that remains pending, according to the Legislative Information System (SIL).

On December 11, 2024, the initiative was submitted to the Chamber of Deputies’ Labour and Social Security Committee and published in the Parliamentary Gazette the day before (December 10), with no changes to its status so far.

For now, there is no official position on whether discussion of this initiative will continue during the current session, which began on September 1st. It should be noted that the initiative was rejected when it was introduced in the 65th Legislature and had to be reintroduced during the current session.

What the Double Initiative Proposes

The Double Bonus Initiative, published in the Parliamentary Gazette, proposes that workers be given a minimum bonus of 30 days. Currently Article 87 of the Federal Labour Law (LFT) establishes that the minimum is 15 days.

Napoleón Gómez Urrutia’s initiative says, “Workers will be entitled to an annual bonus which must be paid before December 20, equivalent to at least 30 days’ salary.”

Gómez Urrutia argues that the changes to this article in the LFT are necessary, not only to improve benefits workers receive, but also because the number of days has not changed since 1970, when the regulation was passed.

The double bonus will not be a reality in Mexico until it has been approved by both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. After that, the decree must be approved and signed by President Sheinbaum for publication in the Federal Labour Law (LFT).

Meanwhile, for 2025, workers are entitled to receive the usual Christmas Bonus of at least 15 days. This payment must be made in full by December 20th for temporary and confidential workers, with the exception of those paid on a fee-based basis.
