Details: Drones were spotted near several military sites, though the military leadership has not disclosed the exact locations or the number of drones detected.
Several units of the Danish Armed Forces were deployed to respond to the incidents, but military officials have not clarified what measures were taken. The Ministry of Defence referred further questions to the armed forces.
One location where the drones were seen was Karup air base, the main base of the Royal Danish Air Force. The UAVs were spotted both within the base perimeter and in the surrounding airspace.
A police representative from Central and Western Jutland said that around 20:00, one or two drones were observed in the area. The airspace was temporarily closed to civilian flights, although this had little practical impact as Karup currently handles no civilian traffic.
Police are working with the military and have asked anyone who witnessed activity near the base on the evening of 26 September to come forward.
Karup air base is Denmark’s largest military employer, with around 3,500 personnel. The base hosts ground, air and naval units, houses all of Denmark’s military helicopters, oversees airspace control and serves as the site of the air force sergeant school.
Background:
Copenhagen airport, the busiest in Scandinavia, was closed for several hours on the night of 22-23 September after multiple large drones were spotted in its airspace. Five smaller airports, both civilian and military, were also temporarily closed in the following days. The Danish government considers it to be a hybrid attack, and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the incident as “the most serious attack on Denmark’s critical infrastructure to date”.
