I highly recommend this humorous piece by Rebecca Solnit: Meditations in an Emergency, Letter from the Portland War Front (humor about something deadly serious).

Below is a note from a reader who lives in Portland, Oregon (Sue P.). Trump announced on Saturday morning that he was ordering Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to send US military into “WAR RAVAGED” Portland, Oregon.

Per Sue:

Just want your readers to know that in spite of Trump’s total lies about Portland, Oregon, we are completely fine. There has been no disruption in our city; downtown is fine, including Pioneer Square, which is our “living room” for all activities, demonstrations, and more. The blocks with government buildings are peaceful with ZERO barricades, detours or police. People are on the streets shopping or leisurely walking, Timbers fans are walking / driving to our stadium (near downtown) for the soccer game about to start, etc.

In other words, our city is “alive and well,” albeit the challenge we face housing our homeless population.

Don’t know what T’s troops are going to do here … maybe enjoy some of our wonderful local cafés or taste beers from our hometown breweries??!

Below, a photo from Charyl C. of a street corner protest in Portland. Hardly “WAR RAVAGED.”

Daily Dose of Perspective

The Crescent Nebula is located about 5,000 light-years from Earth. It is formed by the collision of two stellar shockwaves from a dying star. Per Wikipedia:

It is formed by the fast stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 colliding with and energizing the slower-moving wind ejected by the star when it became a red giant around 250,000 to 400,000 years ago. The result of the collision is a shell and two shock waves, one moving outward and one moving inward. The inward-moving shock wave heats the stellar wind to X-ray-emitting temperatures.
