Referring to the expropriation of properties belonging to figures linked to the national leader of the PRI, Alejandro Moreno, by the Campeche government, President Claudia Sheinbaum asserted: “What I understand is that these are properties acquired through money laundering from corruption, and that’s why this scheme is being implemented.” In this context, she announced that amendments are being prepared to the law regulating asset forfeiture to include properties derived from corruption as well as being subject to this regime.
During her press conference, the President emphasized that she currently promotes asset forfeiture even in proven cases of organized crime. “In other words, the person is already held accountable, and forfeiting assets is very difficult.”

She acknowledged that the measure promoted by Campeche Governor Sansores is directed against people closely linked to Moreno, including the PRI leader’s mother and another figure, José Juan Salazar, who is identified as a front man for the former governor of Campeche.
Therefore, now, with the reform being prepared by the Legal Counsel of the Federal Executive Branch, the President proposed that “if a property is acquired, it must be clearly proven, right? And a judge must determine anything, but if, due to corruption or misuse of resources, a property is purchased and it can be proven that it was purchased with public funds or ill-gotten funds through a kickback or something else, then it should be handed over to the Ministry of Public Education to build schools or universities.”
