Mexico City. The families of the Mexican activists who are part of the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF)—which was heading to Gaza with humanitarian aid and was intercepted by Israel—demanded a political statement from the Mexican government regarding the “kidnapping” of their compatriots, to which officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) responded, “We are processing it.”
This afternoon, the families of some of the Mexican activists met with Foreign Ministry personnel, including Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs María Teresa Mercado, demanding action to guarantee the safety of the Mexicans traveling on the flotilla.
Upon leaving the meeting, they joined a rally taking place outside the facility, where one of the family members said:
“It’s the least we expect from our President (Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo): that she take a political stance on what’s happening. It’s incredible that after the first attacks, she didn’t mention anything the next day. They attacked a ship and not a single statement. I mean, incredible! It’s unacceptable and disappointing!”
So far, they indicated, the interception of the boats carrying Arlin Medrano, Sol González, Ernesto Ledesma, and Carlos Pérez has been confirmed.
They reported that during the meeting, Foreign Ministry staff told them that the nationals are expected to be held incommunicado for at least 12 hours. “It is unknown where they were taken, their physical condition, or the conditions of their detention. Verbal notes have been exchanged with the Israeli government to learn the reasons and conditions of their arrest, but there has been no response.”
Kidnappers from the genocidal regime
David Peña, a human rights lawyer who is working with the families, said that a “stronger” political statement was requested at the meeting. However, the response was: “We’re going to process them.”
Given this, he added, “we’re withdrawing, taking it as a note, and waiting for it to be processed.”
In front of dozens of people who joined the demonstration—which is now moving along Paseo de la Reforma—they explained that a permanent meeting with the Foreign Ministry has been established to address any situation that might arise involving fellow citizens participating in the GSF.
They requested that staff from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Legal Counsel be present at the next in-person meeting, to be held on Friday, “to report on the legal actions the Mexican government is taking in response to international complaints, particularly at the United Nations, regarding the attacks on the flotilla, the illegal and arbitrary detention, the incommunicado detention, and the arbitrary transfer (to Israel) of the Mexicans who are part of this flotilla.”
They said that so far, the support offered by the Foreign Ministry is “limited” to consular assistance and protection.
They demanded that beyond this, pressure be placed on Benjamin Netanyahu’s regime to ascertain the location of their detention, the charges against them, and their physical condition.

“It’s important to maintain pressure and demand that the rights of the 493 people on the flotilla, especially the seven Mexicans, be respected.”
According to the information available so far, they said, the Israeli government is expected to adopt “the immediate deportation protocol.”
To which they added: “Apparently, that is what they would carry out. There is no intention of charging them with a criminal charge, but rather (they are accused of) ‘illegal’ entry into Israeli territory. However, they were not in Israeli territory, but in international waters, and in any case, that strip of sea (where they were detained) belongs to Gaza, not Israel.”
Following the report from the relatives, the protesters marched toward Paseo de la Reforma, where traffic was disrupted.
Some of them threw themselves at the windows of several businesses on this avenue, causing damage.
The intention is to reach the vicinity of the United States Embassy in Mexico.
