How did you get involved with anti-war activism and World BEYOND War (WBW)?

Militarism and the weapons industry are important topics to me. I studied Peace and Conflict Resolution at Goucher College where I mostly focused on topics including war and natural resources. I enjoy learning about these important issues as they help me to understand how and why culture and geography are informed by these stories about the past. Furthermore, how history is shaping the future. We are very much products of the past and our shared collective histories. Therefore, I want to continue to educate myself on how we got to where we are today as a nation and as a planet. The geopolitical climate we find ourselves in today is influenced by decisions made by leaders of the past. Perhaps, we can better understand how to create new solutions to the pressing issues of today such as climate, environmental justice, and natural resource management by understanding our shared historical context. There is always a lot at stake and I believe World BEYOND War has many of the tools and resources necessary to better adapt to this ever-changing world. Their courses and internship program have helped me to continue my education in this field and I am grateful to the organization for this!

What kinds of WBW activities do you work on?

At WBW I am mostly focused on organizing the events calendar and sending out grant letters. It is such an honor to be part of such a dedicated organization that makes an effort to tackle issues a lot of other organizations might shy away from. Thanks so much for having me as part of the World BEYOND War team! I appreciate your commitment and dedication to war abolition. Being part of a solidarity based organization provides me a bit of solace in knowing that there is a community out there that is also passionate about advocating for a safer world. War has a lot of consequences both emotionally, environmentally, technologically, and financially. The more we explore these consequences the more we can potentially explore solutions as well. I am proud of the work being done in this field and am excited to continue educating myself about the future of war and the military-industrial complex.

What’s your top recommendation for someone who wants to get involved with anti-war activism and WBW?

Participate in one of our courses! Also check out our events calendar. There are a TON of events happening daily. I know it can feel overwhelming to keep up with everything happening but I highly suggest and recommend this! You will not be disappointed and you may even meet some friends along the way! Happy hunting for your next class or event to be part of.

What keeps you inspired to advocate for change?

Reading the news these days keeps me feeling energized and inspired. I am motivated by numbers, data, and statistics. The more I read about what is happening the more fearful I feel. Then I remember that it is important to muster up the courage to take action. Because future generations will really appreciate the work being done to ensure a safer and a better connected world for them in which children are able to become educated. That is so important especially when the cost of higher education keeps increasing. What are we going to do to ensure our children have the opportunity to follow their dreams and learn about what is happening around them? We are living in an increasingly globalized world and I strongly feel that people should have the option to learn about how the global economy operates and what globalism is contributing to the planet. I really feel that education-based programming is the future and we need to invest in more organizations that promote the learning process to people from a variety of backgrounds.
