Editor’s note: Alejandro “Alito” Morena Cárdenas is the deeply unpopular President of the PRI and a Senator, who has been a mainstay of news in the last few months for being the target of corruption investigations resulting from his time as Governor of Campeche state (from which he is protected by parliamentary immunity), meeting with US politicians to agitate against the Mexican government, his appearances on Fox News, assaulting a Senator and staff in Mexico’s Senate, and having properties “connected” to him expropriated by Campeche state for use in a new health university. He’s also one of only a few politicians in the world who seeks to revive the moribund Socialist International, primarily as another outlet to protect his ailing political fortunes, as he’s also been a figure of controversy in his own party for extending his control over it.
New audio recordings of PRI national leader Alito Moreno have come to light, allegedly revealing how he triangulated resources and used his mother as a front man to acquire land in Campeche. The PRI senator has denied on multiple occasions owning a private beach and numerous plots of land that he acquired at ridiculously low prices when he was governor of Campeche.
Moreno Cárdenas has tried to blame Morena and accused them of political persecution due to their statements against Sheinbaum ‘s government before international organizations.
In the audio circulating online, a voice allegedly belonging to the PRI leader is on a call with his real estate advisor, Armando Zertuche, who explains how to conduct transactions with his land in a way that appears legal. Zertuche explains how to register and sell your properties to achieve higher returns.
During the call, the manager reveals his ignorance of the large amount of land he owns, but his agent gives him a list of the properties, suggesting which ones he can sell. The material also includes the triangulation they use with others to organize their “business,” as well as the corresponding payments to each person.
In another part of the audio, the real estate consultant suggests Alito establish a loan agreement through which he lends one of his properties for 10 years and, when the contract expires, collects the money. This tactic would seek to avoid including the properties in the PRI member’s asset declaration.
Moreno admits that he carried out purchase and sale transactions for some properties in his mother’s name: “In the case of my mother’s operation, I’m going to tell them that Eduardo Macay will pay for it, then we have to do an appraisal of the big house, put it at 15 and when they pay her, they can transfer it to my account,” he explained.
The PRI senator also confesses that he owns a huge piece of land in Champotón , but he hasn’t considered selling it. Regarding that land, Zertuche acknowledges that the property was purchased at a very low price, and Alito responds that when he joins Congress, “more things will come up,” referring to business deals:
“There won’t be any trouble right now. I’ll go to the chamber right now and more things will come out,” the Senator emphasized.
