The first poll of the mayoral race since Mayor Eric Adams abandoned his reelection bid last month is out, and it shows his exit has had only a minimal impact on the race.

A Quinnipiac University poll released on Thursday shows Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani continuing to hold a double-digit lead over his other rivals in the race, independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Forty-six percent of likely voters said they would back Mamdani for mayor followed by Cuomo with 33 percent and Sliwa with 15 percent.

Cuomo appears to have gotten a significant boost as a result of Adams dropping out of the race. Quinnipiac’s September 10 poll found the former governor receiving 23 percent of support and Mamdami and Sliwa roughly where they are today.

On favorability, Mamdani led the trio with 43 percent of voters saying they had a favorable opinion of the assemblymember compared to 35 percent who viewed him negatively. Only 37 percent said they had a favorable opinion of Cuomo while 52 percent said they had an unfavorable opinion of him. As for Sliwa, 27 percent of voters reported having a favorable opinion of him while 40 percent said they had a negative opinion of the Guardian Angels founder.

Since securing the Democratic nomination in June, Mamdani has continued to consolidate support within his party, receiving the endorsements of Governor Kathy Hochul as well as New York representatives Jerry Nadler, Yvette Clark, and Pat Ryan. But House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have yet to weigh in on the race to run their hometown.

With Sliwa vowing to stay in the race to the end, Cuomo will likely need to peel off a significant amount of Republican voters from the party nominee in addition to moderate voters in hopes of narrowing the gap between him and Mamdani. The Quinnipiac poll shows Cuomo receiving 37 percent of support from Republicans compared to 54 percent for Sliwa.
