Protest Photos

Below, Berkeley, CA (6 photos): Every Friday, a group of 20-40 or so stands at the corner of Gilman and Santa Fe in Berkeley, with music, tambourines, and signs, to greet rush hour drivers. We get SO MANY HONKS, from bus and delivery drivers, from gardeners and contractors, from cars full of teenagers and cars with little kids buckled up in the back seat. Even though we live in a Blue Bubble, being together in this way lifts all of us up.

Below, Woodstock NY: “Here’s a photo of our Downtown Daisy Defenders of Democracy rally. Neighbors meet once a week for 1/2 hour and have a great time together. We love knowing there are other tiny, rural rallies all over the country!”

Below, Portland: “I thought you would like to see a very powerful protest here in Portland. The protestors all wore black, standing every few feet with their black signs. They were not interacting with each other or the passersby, but instead remained somber.

It was a powerful thing to see.”

Below, from Philadelphia: “Since March 8, we gather every Saturday from 1-2 PM on a busy corner in Springfield Township, a Philadelphia suburb, along two busy streets at a local mall. We share our sentiments visually and try to connect with the many who pass with windows open and cell phone photos being taken. We now average about 150 joyous, peaceful protesters each week. Passing traffic made photographing the full protest difficult, but the two attached photos are stitched together in Photoshop from about 6 individual shots.

Below, Newburyport, MA: “Hands Across High Street. We will also be hosting a No Kings Rally on October 18th.”

Below, from Albany, CA, with a note from reader Linda B:

Robert, your hopeful spirit and integrity have kept me going for years. Grateful for you. Here’s a wee contribution:

It’s not too late to save Democracy!

Daily Dose of Perspective

On Friday, Jill and I visited the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. It is a magnificent example of neo-Gothic (English) architecture. The stained glass windows are beautiful and unusual, incorporating many modern themes.

The stained-glass window below, called The Space Window, illustrates our exploration of space. Designed by Rodney Winfield, a St. Louis-based designer.

In the middle of the red orb is a rock returned to Earth by the Apollo 11 astronauts.

How many centuries, or millennia, will The Space Window endure? (The oldest stained glass windows in the world (Augsburg Cathedral in Germany) are nearly 1,000 years old.)

I took the photo with my iPhone, so the image quality is not as sharp as I would like, but it will do.
