Every day, President Claudia Sheinbaum gives a morning presidential press conference and Mexico Solidarity Media posts English language summaries, translated by Mexico Solidarity’s Pedro Gellert Frank. Previous press conference summaries are available here.
Record Job Numbers Registered with IMSS
Mexico registered almost 22.64 million formal jobs as of October 31, the second-highest figure on record. Of these, 9.1 million are held by women, and in 2025 alone, over 100,000 new jobs for women have been created.
Full Support for Sonora: Sheinbaum Backs Investigation into Waldo’s Tragedy
President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that the Sonora State Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the fire and likely explosion at a Waldo’s outlet in Hermosillo, where 23 people died and 11 were injured. She said the federal government is coordinating efforts with the governor and state authorities to support both the investigation and the victims. “We deeply regret the loss of life… victims are receiving full attention,” she said.
Justice Without Returning to War: Sheinbaum Condemns Murder of Carlos Manzo and Rejects Past Strategies
Sheinbaum condemned the killing of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, and declared that “there will be no impunity.” The President confirmed that the federal government is providing support to Manzo’s family and that she personally ordered protection for them. She emphasized that Manzo did have federal security assistance through the National Guard.
The President distanced her administration from past policies, noting that the current violence stems from the “war on drugs” launched by Felipe Calderón and continued under Enrique Peña Nieto, which relied on militarization, executions, and vigilante groups, strategies that “did not work.” “Acting outside the law or through violence only generates more violence,” Sheinbaum explained.
She defended her own security strategy based on intelligence, investigation, coordination with states and municipalities, and addressing root causes so that young people have opportunities.
Sheinbaum accused some opposition figures of reacting “like vultures,” using Manzo’s murder for political gain. Her message was clear: justice, not opportunism; security through a strong state, not with an iron fist or militarization.
No Infiltration and Reinforced Security in Michoacán: Investigation into Manzo’s Murder Continues
Security authorities reported no evidence that the mayor’s bodyguards or municipal police were linked to organized crime. Minister of National Defense Ricardo Trevilla noted that the mayor personally chose his team, making infiltration unlikely, though the line of investigation remains open.
Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Omar García Harfuch reported that one of Manzo’s bodyguards shot and killed an assailant during the attack, and the identity of the attacker is being traced through C5 surveillance cameras and footage from nearby businesses to determine the criminal group involved. He added that, if necessary, the case could be transferred to the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to ensure full justice.
García Harfuch also announced increased security in Michoacán and coordination across the three levels of government. He acknowledged that security personnel have been killed or abducted in the line of duty and affirmed that the government “will not abandon those who risk their lives to protect citizens.”
Legitimate Grief, Induced Violence: Sheinbaum Denounces Political Use of Manzo’s Murder
Sheinbaum acknowledged the legitimate public outrage in Morelia and confirmed that a peaceful demonstration had taken place, but said a group of provocateurs sought to incite violence. She said that social media reports are being investigated and accused the opposition of using the assassination for political purposes. “There’s money involved,” she said.
Meanwhile, García Harfuch reported that security officers who subdued protesters are under federal investigation and that there will be no impunity for abuses.
Bilateral Relations with the U.S.: Agreements on the Way
In the next few days, Minister of Economy will present the results of recent meetings with U.S. officials. The Presidency announced that significant cooperation and security agreements are in the hopper.
“No One Is Above the Law”: Sheinbaum Rejects Calls for Violence and Criticizes Salinas Pliego
President Sheinbaum responded to rhetoric promoting vigilantism or “iron fist” policies, saying that figures suich as business magnate Ricardo Salinas Pliego even politicize their tax disputes “because they don’t want to comply with the law.” She reminded the public that no one is above the law.
Sheinbaum concluded by saying that “this is not about returning to the past, but about building justice — justice for those who have never had it. For the good of all, the poor come first.”
Airlines: Mexico Will Defend Competition Against U.S. Complaints
Regarding claims of insufficient competition among Mexican airlines, the President called the reports false. She announced she would send a letter to U.S. authorities to clarify the issue and defend Mexico’s aviation sector.
Agriculture and Border: Meeting with the U.S.
Today, Sheinbaum will meet with Brooke Rollins, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, to discuss reopening border crossings in relation to livestock movement and verification, aiming to protect exports and prevent harm to Mexican producers.
