I ask this every time: What will a 3rd impeachment accomplish that a first or second didn’t? Trump has proven that everything is just a formality and he can do whateverthefuck he wants.

What do you lose by impeachment? Any flicker of resistance is better than just lying down and telling the world we consent.

What is lost is it makes it seem political instead of a real crime.

Impeachment is like getting charged with a crime. Without the follow up Senate conviction to impeachment, it means he wasn’t judged guilty.

Trump doesn’t listen to courts anyways, so what’s the point? We’ve seen that Senate hearings are just theater as well.

They already made it a witch hunt the first two times, why not one more? Ignoring his crimes can’t lessen the damage already done, with enough repetition maybe they’ll accidentally catch up with him at some point. The more you have to leverage controlled opposition the less controlled it gets.

The two party handbook is falling apart because they’re stretching it to ludicrous extremes, look at how shit everyone is polling. American voters and global “Allies” should be cheering for any faint pulse on the USA’s desiccated corpse.

Nah it’s much more likely that they would abolish the impeachment mechanism long before it became too embarrassing.

Impeachment shouldn’t be taboo because it’s the only (intended) way to hold officials accountable. It’s been stigmatized by career politicians because it’s not in either party’s interest to get kicked out or put a target on their back.

Looking at the past century we should have had a huge chunk of representatives impeached for their parts in the USA’s shitty policies. Not all should have convicted but there was never any scrutiny beyond the newspapers.

Perfect. The Dems can continue to pretend like they are opposing Trump while not actually doing a goddamn thing.

Who gives a shit about the dems? If they continue to impeach and fail on following through that’s just more evidence that they’re unfit to hold any office. If the Rs cling tighter to the sinking ship, they’re just digging a deeper grave. Have them all list out the crimes and waffle around on the public stage.

There’s a lot the average person/voter should be doing but if you’re not demanding an impeachment whenever possible and keeping receipts on the collaborators you’re not doing the bare minimum. That’s true for literally any stance that opposes fascism. Even if you’re a dumbass accelerationist who just wants fascism to march forward and implode, you still should want a public display of systemic corruption.

so you’re just admitting it’s all theater. I ask again: What will a 3rd impeachment accomplish that a first or second didn’t?

I could never tell you if it doesn’t happen. If the 5th impeachment brings consequences then does it matter that the first 4 were powder puff? Is two the magic number fascists have to beat to stop thinking about impeachment forever? If you really believe it’s total theater without even an accidental chance of a positive outcome then why bother commenting on it? Go spend your efforts elsewhere.

Forcing a rep to publicly voice opposition is only a risk for that rep. They’re the one standing on the stage against the administration. Congress has to take time out of their busy schedule of banning abortion and legalizing slavery to debate it. Make them keep doing it until something breaks. It costs me literally nothing and it damages the legitimacy of this shit show government either way.

I am. I’m part of DSA. I’m marching with strikers. I’m helping teachers. I’m doing mutual aid. I’m protesting ICE and getting in the face of Proud Boys. We’re getting Socialists elected locally. I’m doing banner drops for Palestine.

                What have you accomplished lately?

From your replies, it has confirmed what I suspected: absolutely nothing. Thanks for the discussion. Cheers!

If dems get both house and senate then they could impeach and convict.

The house impeached (opens an investigation), the senate convicts (kicks president out of office). No president has been convicted, but a few have been impeached (Clinton and Trump being the modern examples). Nixon resigned because he was told he would be convicted by the senate and decides to avoid that issue.

That’s all just hypothetical, assuming Dems aren’t complicit in the system working exactly as intended. Don’t you find it strange that there’s always a cohort of Dems that vote against the party line?

Let’s just say that all of that miraculously happens. Trump has shown that he can defy court orders with zero repercussions (as he has done dozens of time this year). What then?

Of course it’s hypothetical. But the only way a third impeachment matters is if they can convict, otherwise it’s just a show.

If democrats don’t get the house and senate their biggest play seems to be to shut things down. Outside of that there doesn’t seem to be a lot that they can (or are willing to) do to rein Trump in.

What advice, or help, or positive momentum have you contributed?

Or are you just publicly complaining “every time?”
