I don’t think they want to deescalate… there was a surprising stream of comments from conservatives critical of their response. By announcing that they’ll deescalate, they give their supporters the feeling of being heard. That’s enough for conservatives to say: “They really tried, but the rioters just kept trying to escalate!” when the next protester is murdered.
